“A cultural phenomenon” – Variety Magazine. “Broadway’s biggest blockbuster” – New York Times. Can you guess which musical earned these words of praise? The modern day classic Wicked of course! Be sure to check out this awesome show during its spring run at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood!
A Tale of Two Witches
Wicked is a musical adaptation of the 1995 book Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire. Essentially Wicked is an origin story about the two main witches from The Wizard of Oz, Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda, the Good Witch of the North. The story takes place many years before Dorothy arrives.
Critical Acclaim
Surprisingly, Wicked received harsh criticism when it began and many reviewers thought it would fare poorly. 10 years and 3.1 billion dollars later Wicked has become a juggernaut of the musical world.
Those early reviewers could never have guessed that not only would Wicked become a commercial success but it would even achieve widespread critical acclaim. Since its first showing in 2003, Wicked has racked up 35 major awards including a Grammy and three Tony awards. It is also the 11th longest-running Broadway show in history.
