What to do over the Holidays in Chicago
The holiday season is upon us and the Windy city is abuzz with holiday events and cheer! From lights at the zoo to a traditional German holiday market, don’t miss out on any of Chicago’s great holiday events.
Zoo Lights (November 29th– January 5th)
Lincoln Park’s Zoo annual Zoo lights event is a family friendly and free event that will take place from November 29th through January 5th. The zoo will be decorated with dazzling lights that are sure to inspire holiday cheer in all who see them! This event will also include seasonal activities throughout the zoo and will even host Santa Claus as its special guest until he returns to the North Pole on December 23rd. Don’t miss out on pictures with Santa, animal encounters, carousel and train rides and a musical light show among many other events!
Christkindlmarket (November 26th– December 24th)
Another holiday event taking place in the city is the 18th Annual Christkindlmarket, which is a traditional German-American holiday market taking place from November 26th – December 24th. This free event will feature handcrafted ornaments, unique holiday gifts along with your choice of traditional German foods and beverages. The market also includes activities and a performer who will play the role of the Christkind, a being from German folklore who is said to bring gifts to children. She will be walking around and telling stories throughout the market. Be sure to come to Christkindlmarket to experience a traditional German Christmas in the heart of Chicago!
Magnificent Mile Lights Festival (November 23rd)
The BMO Harris Bank Magnificent Mile Lights Festival will kick off on November 23rd with a full day of family friendly events, holiday shopping, concerts by top musical artists and a tree-lighting parade marshaled by Mickey and Minnie Mouse and a firework show to end the festive day! You do not want to miss this magical day taking place on Chicago’s beautiful Magnificent Mile!
Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony (November 26th)
The 100th Annual Anniversary of the Christmas Lighting Ceremony will take place Tuesday November 26th on Daley Plaza from 5pm-6pm. This historic event will feature live performances headlined by Darlene Love and will feature many other live dance performances such as an excerpt from the holiday favorite The Nutcracker and of course the lighting of the tree.
