Be a part of one of the largest triathlons in the world! The Transamerica Chicago Triathlon will take place on Sunday, August 28th in downtown Chicago. About the Transamerica Chicago Triathlon Weekend

Triathletes from all over the world have been gathering on the shores of Lake Michigan for over 30 years to run, bike and swim their way through one of America’s favorite cities. The Transamerica Chicago Triathlon is Chicago’s only city-based triathlon and has taken place during the last weekend of August since it began in 1983. The 2016 Transamerica Chicago Triathlon will begin at 6am on Sunday, August 28th in the Monroe Harbor. The schedule for the day is as follows:

  • 4-5:45am. BigRing Transition open (Monroe Harbor)
  • 6am. International waves start
  • 6:30-8:30am. BigRing Transition re-opens (Sprint)
  • 8am-3pm. Transamerica Trolley service runs
  • 8am-2pm. Post-race party and picnic (Columbus & Balbo)
  • 8:45am. Sprint waves start
  • 10:15am. Last swimmer enters water
  • 10:45am. Last swimmer exits water
  • 10:54am. Last athlete enters bike course
  • 11am. Awards ceremony
  • 12pm. Last athlete exits bike course
  • 12:05pm. Last athlete enters run course
  • 1:45pm. Last athlete finishes


The triathlon course features a swim in Monroe Harbor followed by a biking and running course through the city. The participants are divided into 3 separate categories designed to accommodate athletes of every ability, interest level and goal: SuperSprint, Sprint and International/Olympic. These categories determine the length of each individual event. Participants in the SuperSprint division will swim .23 miles, bike 6.2 miles and run 1.5 miles for a total distance of 7.95 miles. Participants in the Sprint division will swim .47 miles, bike 15 miles and run 3.1 miles for a total distance of 18.57 miles. Finally, participants qualifying for the International/Olympic division will swim .93 miles, bike 24.8 miles and run 6.2 miles for a total distance of 31.93 miles. In addition to the triathlon, there will be a number of other exciting events happening that weekend:


Transamerica Chicago Triathlon Multisport & Fitness Expo presented by Men’s Health- Hilton Chicago

Recognized as a top show in the sport, the Expo will feature 150 exhibitors and over 200 booths. It is also the site of the mandatory packet pickup, body marking and course talks for all registrants. Free and open to the public.

Chicago Triathlon SuperSprintFoster Beach, Simonds Drive, Lakefront Trail

Kick off the Triathlon weekend with the SuperSprint! Whether you are a new or seasoned athlete, the SuperSprint is made especially for you. Packet pickup opens at 5:30am on the day of the race.

Kids Tri- Foster Beach

The perfect launching pad for children to get into the sport! The Life Time Kids Tri Series is composed of a number of youth triathlons nationwide designed to encourage a healthy lifestyle and fun by physical activity in the youth. Each year, over 1,000 children athletes participate in the race. Open to boys and girls 7-14 years old. Includes a finisher medal, race t-shirt, swim cap, bib number and more.

Due to the high volume of people participating in the event, road closures and traffic reroutes will be active during the weekend of Friday, August 26th. The Transamerica Trolley will be providing complimentary transportation from the transition area to the post-race party and back again for athletes and spectators. Catch the trolley at the northeast corner of Balbo and Columbus and the southwest corner of Lakeshore and Monroe anytime between 8am-3pm. Parking options include:
