Have a Laugh and Learn to Love Awkwardness at this Santa Monica Exhibit

Americans are expected to take 105 billion pictures in the year 2015. Let’s face it, they all can’t be perfect. In fact, a huge number of those photos are bound to turn out well… awkward.

Awkward photos, especially awkward family photos are an unavoidable part of life, so we might as well enjoy them. That’s the idea behind Awkwardfamilyphotos.com, whose new exhibit at the California Heritage Museum is sure to provide guests with a different perspective on bad photos.

The exhibit will run through July 27th  and is open every Wednesday through Sunday 11am to 3pm. General admission to the museum is $10.

“Awkward Family Photos” will feature 11, cringe-inducing themes

  • The Family Portrait
  • Siblings
  • Vacation
  • The Kids
  • The Holidays
  • Weddings
  • Dad
  • Mom
  • The Grandparents
  • Birthdays
  • The Family Pet

According to the exhibit’s website, “The exhibition aims to explore the perfectly imperfect moments that come with the family experience and provide a place for people to celebrate the awkwardness”.

About AkwardFamilyPhotos.com

Childhood friends Mike Bender and Doug Chernack started AwkwardFamilyPhotos.com in 2009. Bender attributes seeing an awkward family photo hanging in his parent’s house as his inspiration for the site.

Since 2009 the Awkward Family Photo’s premise has taken off and now includes a variety of spin-offs, such as books, an App, a board game, phone cases, and even a new site featuring pets!  Awkward Family Photos  invites submissions from anyone, so be sure to pitch in and contribute your own awkwardness!

Though the photos are quite entertaining, In an interview with LA Weekly, Bender reiterated the theme the idea that awkward family photos are bigger than humor, their something we all have in common and can relate to. Saying that“It emphasizes the fact that we’re all awkward and that we have this stuff common with other families”
