Cirque Du Soleil: TOTEM in Santa Monica

“A fascinating journey into the evolution of mankind.” This tagline for Cirque Du Soleil: TOTEM accurately describes the content of the show, but it barely scratches the surface of what a Cirque Du Soleil experience is all about.

Since 1984 Cirque Du Soleil has wowed audiences with its unique shows. Using a combination of acrobatics, gymnastics, music and choreography, the Canadian based contemporary circus has continued to create interesting original shows, and TOTEM is no exception.

TOTEM combines elements of various creation mythologies to tell the story of man’s journey from an amphibian creature all the way to our attempts at flight. Like all Cirque Du Soleil productions, a cast of extremely talented individuals help immerse the audience, but TOTEM’s charm also includes a few awe-inspiring stage elements such as 7-foot tall stilts and a 2700 lb. turtle shell.

The show has been well received by the media including comments from the Boston Globe who describe it as “visually ravishing”, as well as the Toronto Star who called the show “Spectacular, artful. Breathtaking and deliciously iconic”. The show also received the 2013 New York Drama Desk Award for Unique Theatrical Experience.

TOTEM is coming to Santa Monica, on January 17th and will run through February 23rd. Fittingly, this new age circus will  take place at the Grand Chapiteau also known as the Big Top at the Santa Monica Pier.  Tickets can be purchased online.
