With plenty of daylight, beautiful weather, green grass and blooming flowers, June is tough to beat.  One community in Chicago likes this time of year so much they hold a festival for it each year!

Midsommarfest is a summer celebration in Chicago’s Andersonville neighborhood. Each year around 50,000 people attend the event which includes live music, kids’ activities and plenty of refreshments. This year the event, which is free to attend, will be celebrating its 50th anniversary between June 12-14.

Musical highlights

Midsommarfest’s acts will be showcased across 5 different stages each day of the festival. Here are some noteworthy performances to check out:

16 Candles –  a mainstay of Midsommarfest. As you can probably guess by the name, 16 Candles is a cover band that specializes in bringing the biggest hits of the 1980s to life.

ABBA Salute– Andersonville was  founded by Swedish immigrants, so it only makes sense that a band covering that country’s most popular music group would be making an appearance at the festival.

Party Like it’s 1965 Stage- A throwback to the music popular around the time of the first Midsommarfest, this stage should be a great time for anyone who loves classic 60s music.

History of Midsommarfest

Midsommarfest is rooted in Andersonville’s Swedish origins. The community was founded primarily by Swedish immigrants in the 1850s as a suburb of Chicago. The name Midsommarfest comes from the traditional Swedish celebration of the summer solstice, also known as St. John’s Day.
