Cambria gets a Whole Lot Scarier! (For Birds)

Hodmedod, Murmet, Hay-man, Momment, Mawkin… do you have any idea what these words mean? They’re actually used in the United Kingdom to describe scarecrows! While we may not have such creative names for them here in The States, events like Cambria’s Scarecrow Festival prove how imaginative we can be when it comes to actually making these hay filled people!

Where whimsy runs rampant

Since 2009 Cambria’s Scarecrow Festival has marked the beginning of fall in a truly memorable way. The event’s tagline “Where whimsy runs rampant” is a perfect description for the type of atmosphere the addition of a few hundred scarecrows adds to the town!

It almost feels like the scarecrows are taking over the central coast when you first see one sitting at a bus stop or perched in a tree! That’s right, the scarecrows of Cambria aren’t content to stand around in a field all day!  They become a part of the community.

A rapidly growing event!

Last year the festival expanded to include the nearby town of San Simeon for the first time. About 350 participants were expected but the final count ended up being over 420!

The Scarecrow Festival takes place throughout the month of October and invites community members, businesses and organizations to display scarecrows in creative ways. There is a competition element involved but a lot of the fun of the event comes from simply seeing so many new hay-filled faces in the area!

Competition critera

So what exactly makes a good scarecrow? Besides the obvious category of “Most likely to scare crows” the hay based visitors are judged in categories like “Most whimsical, Most lifelike, Best animation, Most unique/Creative, and Best of show.
